The History of Volta Motorbikes: A Pioneering Electric Dream
Volta Motorbikes was born in 2010 in Figueres (Girona) at the hands of entrepreneur Marc Barceló. The brand emerged with a very clear and ambitious vision for its time: to create electric motorcycles that were not merely functional products, but also objects of design, passion, and high-quality components, capable of competing in performance and aesthetics with combustion motorbikes.
The goal was to break the perception that electric vehicles were boring or of low quality. To achieve this, they opted for an Italian-inspired naked design and well-equipped cycle parts, with components from recognised brands. After several years of development, they presented their first functional prototypes and finally launched their flagship models, the Volta BCN City and the Volta BCN Sport, around 2015-2016.
Despite the interest generated and the positive reviews their products received for their agility, design, and functionality (such as the innovative helmet storage), the company struggled to achieve economic viability. Small-scale production, high development costs, and a still-incipient electric motorcycle market in Spain hindered its consolidation. Unfortunately, after several attempts at refinancing and seeking investors, Volta Motorbikes filed for bankruptcy in 2019, ceasing production and leaving behind the legacy of having been one of the pioneering and most promising brands in the electrification of two-wheelers in Spain.
